The Bends è il secondo album in studio dei Radiohead, pubblicato per la prima volta dalla Parlophone nel 1995…
Più omogeneo, raffinato ed elaborato del disco d’esordio, The bends risulta essere, a nostro avviso ovviamente, il secondo miglior album in assoluto della Band dietro al successivo, ed inarrivabile, OK Computer. Le melodie, semplici ed accattivanti, vedono un accentuarsi di sonorità dark e hard rock in molti brani, sebbene i migliori risultino essere quelli che meglio si adattano alle corde di Yorke: le delicate ballate sulle quali modula la voce… Anche i testi si fanno più cupi e depressi, sempre arguti e critici nei confronti della società di massa, marchio di fabbrica della band…
I brani possono essere divisi in tre gruppi, ferma restando l’indiscussa superiorità delle inarrivabili Street Spirit e Fake Plastic Trees. Nel primo gruppo possono essere incluse, a nostro avviso ovviamente e in ordine di qualità escludendo Planet Telex, non gradita, le maggiormente rock Just, Bones e The Bends. In quello misto High and Dry, Black Star, My iron lung e Sulk. In quello delle “delicate”, le migliori: Street spirit, Fake plastic trees, Nice Dream, e Bullet Proof…
Il cofanetto contiene un bonus cd di live e b-sides (tra le quali si segnalano The Trickster oltre alle solite Killer Cars e Banana co), un dvd con i video dei singoli e live dei brani, libretto con i testi e cinque cartoline dei singoli Fake Plastic Trees, Street Spirit, My Iron lung, High and Dry/Planet Telex e Just.
Capolavoro di eccellente livello che necessita però di ripetuti ascolti per essere apprezzato appieno…
Consigliato non ai soli fan della band ma a chiunque voglia dilettarsi ascoltando quaranta minuti di musica non commerciale di qualità…
